Charge your guests based on the environmental footprint

Instead of a flat rate, their bill would reflect their water use, energy consumption, and waste. Interesting idea, right?

I saw Thibault Catala’s post about this on LinkedIn, where he proposes a pay-as-you-impact model with the hope that it could push sustainability forward.

It certainly needs the right approach — perhaps a lower base rate with charges for high usage, or a higher base rate with discounts for eco-friendly choices.

For this to work, Thibault states that hotels should:

  • Educate guests without guilt-tripping.
  • Reward eco-friendly choices instead of punishing consumption.
  • Use real-time tech to track and share impact.

Would guests go for it, or is it too soon?

(Shoutout to The Social Hub Amsterdam for already nudging guests to rethink water use 👏)
